Former Laker Metta World Peace Engages with Strategic Marketing Class

Instructor Javon Frazier’s Strategic Marketing class had a little more star power than usual during Spring Quarter. Students used the start-up venture of former Laker Metta World Peace as a case study — and for their final presentations, Metta himself was on hand to “judge” their work.

Metta started his relationship with UCLA Extension as a student in our Social Media Marketing class this past summer. Since then, he’s been working with BMLP to offer internship opportunities to our students. He’s enjoyed working with our students, so when this opportunity to offer his company as a case-study came up, he was fully on-board.

His company is Gradelo, an app that serves as a social networking platform for sports enthusiasts. The students needed to devise a plan to launch Gradelo, and plan it’s future growth (user acquisition and eventual monetization).

The 35 students in class divided into six groups. They all were given the same information about the company, and each had to develop a strategic marketing plan to present. It was a great learning opportunity for the students to not only have a real case-study to build a strategic marketing campaign for, but also to “pitch” in front of the owner.
